Crazy Popcorn Nutritionals

February 28th, 2008 by Pamela

Okay, people.  What is the deal with the crazy nutritional information located on microwave popcorn?  I mean, seriously, who eats raw popcorn kernels?  So why is it necessary to have the nutritional information for unpopped kernels on the box at all?  I personally believe it is just to drive you insane.

One of my favorite snacks has been Orville Redenbacher’s 100 calorie mini bags of Kettle Corn.  Unfortunately, I calculated Weight Watchers points for them before I ever read the “fine print.”  And sadly, I never double-checked.  I decided to take a second look the other day and realized that the popcorn I eat every day with my dinner has one more point than I thought it did.  <SIGH>  So, I’ve been eating at least five more points each week than I thought I was.  The unpopped popcorn has 4 grams of fiber while the popped has only 3.  This ends up making it one more point than I thought (2 instead of only 1).

I think I’ll switch to the new Curves mini bags of popcorn.  They’re only 90 calories, and I know for a fact that they are only one point each.  They’re not kettle corn, but they’re delicious!

This reminds me of a great Cathy comic that I saw once. Click on the thumbnail below for a full-size image.
