Learning To Live After Losing A Person

Necessity or Laziness?

March 12th, 2008 by Pamela

Sometimes I do amaze myself.  There are very rare moments when I really feel proud of myself, but sometimes at work I can come up with some pretty good ways to more easily accomplish a project that even surprises me.

I was brought a project today at work that involved converting a 1043 row Word table into Excel (Why? I have no idea.).  I should probably mention that this table also contained 523 footnotes.  And no, you’re right, Excel does not allow footnotes.  They decided that they wanted these foonotes in a “comments” column instead.

Some of my co-workers believed that we would have to copy and paste each and every footnote into the proper row.  They also believed that we’d manually have to go through and replace all of the soft line breaks within the cells.  Using some creative maneuvering, I was able to get the project done in a third of the time they originally thought.   They wanted it by Friday and I was able to get it back to them today.

This led me to the belief that necessity isn’t the mother of invention.  Laziness is.
