Dragging

I am definitely going to be dragging today.  As can be expected, I was exhausted when I got home from work last night.  For obvious reasons.  I still followed my usual routine: did the things I needed to do and settled down to finish the latest Harry Dresden book by Jim Butcher.  It’s a fantastic series – at least I think so.  I’m sure my friends are sick of hearing about it.  It’s about a wizard (yeah, another wizard named Harry) that lives in Chicago.  It has lots of adventure and humor.  I often find myself laughing out loud.  So, I was sad to finish it, but as I mentioned the other day, I have plenty of books to keep me occupied.  I am devastated, though, to think that I have to wait a whole year before the next one comes out!

And so, after seeing Carlos recommend “The Long Walk” by Stephen King/Richard Bachman, I picked it up on my Borders excursion over the weekend.  Even though I have a trusty and brand-new Nora Roberts book at hand, I decided Stephen King would take precedence this time around.

In all fairness, Carlos warned me.  He said, “Be careful about starting you might not be
able to stop.”  Did I listen?  Of course not.  I finished the Dresden book right about the time I usually go to bed, but I decided to read just a couple of pages of “The Long Walk” since I was really looking forward to starting it.  I thought I would just get a feel for it.

A couple of pages.  Ha.

110 pages later, I finally couldn’t keep my eyes open any longer and went to sleep.  An hour and half after I usually go to bed.

It’s like a train wreck.  I find myself reading, unable to look away.  Watching in fascination and horror and a sadness for the waste of life.  And that’s all I’m going to say about it right now.  But knowing Stephen King, there will be a big payoff later.

I find myself eager to go to work today.  Mostly just to get it over with so I can come home and bury myself in an even more twisted world than my own.
