Sleep Deprivation

June 8th, 2008 by Pamela

My sleep schedule is seriously out-of-whack.  I work evenings during the week, and my schedule is completely backwards.  I’m usually up until about 6 or 7 am and then sleep until around 2 or 2:30 pm before I get ready for work.  On weekends, however, I’m usually up by 8 or 9 in the morning.  Sometimes earlier.  This is simply because I don’t want to waste a second of my weekend.  In fact, if I could go without sleep completely on weekends, I’d be much happier.

I’ve been known to have trouble with getting my mind to shut down and let me get to sleep, but I’ve fallen into a bad pattern on Friday nights.  I try to go to sleep early, but I end up just laying there, tossing and turning and usually end up with just a couple of hours of sleep, if that.  Then I’m in bed early Saturday night.  Then I either sleep through and get up early, or sleep for about four hours, get up and then am up until I take a nap Sunday afternoon.  As you can see, it’s all messed up.

Yesterday was one such Saturday.  I couldn’t, for the life of me, get to sleep.  We decided to hit the farmer’s market early yesterday morning, so I knew I would have to get up early.  No matter what I did, my brain just wouldn’t shut down to let me sleep.  I eventually just got back up.  By the time I went to sleep at about 7:30 pm last night, I’d been up for about 29 hours and was starting to feel a bit slap happy.  I fell asleep pretty quickly, but as it is now 3:30 am and I’ve been up for well over an hour, I can sense how the rest of my day is going to go.  I can’t help but think that this can’t be healthy, as seen in the dark circles under my eyes.

Sleep deprivation and all, I did have fun yesterday.  The Kansas City “City Market” is a very cool place.  We mostly went for the farmer’s market (of which I actually didn’t end up buying anything), but I ended up getting a co-worker’s birthday present at one of the little shops.  They also had a lot of craft stands, and of course I ended up falling in love with a bracelet/necklace that I ended up getting for myself.  I could see trips down there being dangerous to my wallet.  It was a fun change, though, as I’d never been.  My advice is to get there early, though!  So many people!

After the market, we ran all of our errands to get them out of the way (which involved picking up the latest Dresden Files comic book), mowed the lawn, and watched a movie called “Feast of Love” with Morgan Freeman.  I enjoyed it quite a bit.  I also have to say that I’m still thoroughly addicted to McDonald’s Ice Cream Cones.

This morning we’re going to see IronMan.  The movie starts at around 10 am, so I guess I’ll just stay up until then.  I’ve heard that you just can’t miss seeing it in the theater.  I was going through some of my brother’s old comics yesterday (I was looking for plastic sleeves for my Dresden Files comics) and came across some really cool ones.  He actually had several old IronMan ones in his files.

I am dying to see KungFu Panda, though.  Hopefully next weekend ;o)

Pamela, years ago I worked at an airport and had a crazy shift of 3pm - 1am. It was a killer shift and wreaked havoc on my sleep. I was completely out of whack. I got a book on relaxing and sleep techniques and there was one thing I did then and still do to this day, that will let me drift off. I have the same problem as you where I can’t shut down my brain.

It’s really simple. Imagine you’re sitting in a dark movie theater, all by yourself. There’s no one else in the theater, just you. And there’s no movie playing, just a big screen that is blank. Absolutely nothing on the screen. You’re sitting in the theater, staring at the blank screen and all your focus is on that screen and that big nothingness. You have to really focus and not let your brain carry you off somewhere else. You have to keep concentrating on the nothingness and the blank screen. For some reason, this one works for me every time.

Thanks for the recommendation of Ironman. I’m looking forward to seeing it. My husband loves that kind of stuff so it’s a movie we could both enjoy.
