Working nights does have its perks
I feel like a little kid again!
We just had our work interrupted by one FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC fireworks show! We have a huge window that stretches the length of our department that has the most amazing view of downtown. Because there are multiple sites nearby the tend to put on fireworks shows fairly often, and because we work nights, we often have front row seats for these great events.
I adore fireworks (you know, as long as there’s no chance of one landing on my head). I remember when I was little, we would go over to my aunt and uncle’s house for the 4th of July and my uncle and cousin would set of fireworks from their backyard. It terrified me. I loved seeing the fireworks, but I was constantly afraid that one would land on me or on their house or something. I mean, we always heard horror stories!
Here, there’s no fear. We’re inside, in a secure building. We don’t have to worry about the heat, the smoke, or the bugs biting us. It’s great! And there just aren’t words enough for me to express how truly beautiful tonight’s performance was. They had several new fireworks that I hadn’t seen before that were stunning, and it was all choreographed beautifully. And this display was particularly close to us, so we felt like we were watching a 3D movie of some sort that seemed to reach out and almost grab us.
Throughout the experience, my co-worker and I found ourselves actually cheering outloud and ended up clapping when it was over. There’s just something about fireworks that brings out the little kid in me. Perhaps, for a brief moment in time, I am given the gift of remembering what it was like to be a child, with the whole world stretching out in front of me with infinite possibilities and the power of an infinite imagination.

I love fireworks too. They’re so fun. I grew up in Fairbanks, Alaska and since we had almost 24 hours of sunshine most of the summer, fireworks were never quite a big deal up there since it never really gets dark on July 4th. But here in Seattle, they’re awesome!

Alaina and I spent the 4th in Crystal Beach, Texas. My dad had rented us a condo on the beach. We were so close to Galveston Island that at night you could clearly see the skyline. It was so beautiful.
Well, that night the beach was packed. My dad had told us that there was going to be a fireworks show, but we had no idea what we were in for. Girl, 1 hour and 45 minutes straight! I kid you not! It was unbelievable! Whether you looked to your left or to your right, there were fireworks going off. And not little ones. I’m talking about Olympic style fireworks!
Ernest could not come with us because he had to work. It was the first time since we had been together that we had ever gone somewhere without him. It was the hardest 5 days of my life, but that’s a whole other story! ;o) Sorry, my point was that Ernest happened to call and check on us in the middle of the show. It was so loud I could barely hear him. He said it sounded like I was in the middle of a war!lol
It’s a shame too because Hurricane Ike wiped out Crystal Beach and Galveston Island. It was so sad looking at the pictures. The condo we stayed in is completely gone. There is nothing left but the cement slab. :o(
