Orville Redenbacher has recently released new 100 calorie packs of mini popcorn smart cakes. I had received an announcement with coupons about them in the mail one day and tried to keep an eye out for them at the grocery store. I found them this past Saturday at Super Wal-Mart. From what I saw, they come in caramel, cheddar, and chocolate. While I was eyeing the cheddar ones, I decided to check out the ingredients. Sadly, they blatantly admit to containing MSG.
Since an incident while my friends were here, I’ve been actively checking out the MSG content on all of my foods. While I won’t claim to be cutting it out of my diet completely (that’d be darn near impossible for me), I am trying to reduce the quantity I consume as much as I reasonably can.
I then allowed my eye to travel down the aisle just a bit. It was then that I discovered Natural Orville Redenbacher 100 calorie popcorn cakes in garlic and herb. The ingredient list on these is MUCH shorter, much easier to pronounce, and no MSG! I decided to take them home and try them out.
I’m in love. I adore them. If you don’t like garlic, I’d pass, because the garlic flavor is a bit strong, but since I love garlic, I think they taste great! And being all natural is an even bigger bonus! I just checked out their website and they come in Garlic and Herb, Buttery Garlic, and Wild Berry. They are also offering a coupon for $1 off. Click here for more information. I know I’ll be looking for the other two flavors to try them.
For those who like their snacks, still need pre-portioned snacks to help them control their eating, and yet are wanting to make a change toward the healthier, I think these are a great option.
Update: Thanks to Shawna, I double-checked the ingredient list for the popcorn snack cakes and they do have “spices” listed as an ingredient. Due to Shawna’s research, she’s discovered that these sneaky manufacturers tend to hide MSG within terms such as “spices.” Shame on them. So while they may, indeed, contain MSG, I still think they’re a better option than some other snacks out there as they contain no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. They also contain 3 grams of fiber where most snacks (such as my beloved Cheetos) contain one gram or less!

are you sure the MSG was just disguised under another name? like ‘natural flavors’ or ‘spices’ – it’s everywhere pammykins, everywhere I tells ya
No, no. I remembered you saying that and remember checking for anything that read like that. I’m pretty sure it didn’t have anything like that in the ingredients, but I’ll double-check when I get a chance.
Okay, you were right. I went back and double-checked and it does indeed say “spices” on the ingredient list. Damn sneaky bastards. I know I checked at the store though, so I must have decided that it was worth the risk. I’m updating my post now…
