Little Miracles

I was driving into Kansas City this afternoon and was completely in awe of the sun shining off of downtown.  I think that the fact that it was somewhat of a cloudy day made it just that much more beautiful, but the sun was shining in full force from behind me and reflected off of many of the buildings.  Winter is usually a pretty dreary time in KC.  One thing I always try to do is to look for the beauty in the little things.  Those every day moments that when you first glance at them seem like nothing special, but [ ... ]

Ready for the Weekend

I don’t know about you all, but I am entirely ready for the weekend.  I just feel completely wiped out.  This week wasn’t overly difficult life-wise or work-wise, just had a lot to think about. I have several goals for this weekend: Get my car washed – WAY overdue.  My used-to-be-dark-blue car is currently white/gray from all of the salt and snow gunk Go hiking at least once Stay on plan Attempt to make homemade soynuts from the soybeans I bought last weekend Attempt to make homemade potato chips from the potatoes I bought last weekend I’m also determined to try the quinoa I bought, since

Sodium Evaluation

I knew there was a lot of sodium in things.  In fact, ever since I started Weight Watchers, I’ve been keeping an eye on it.  If there’s a choice between two items fairly similar in nutritional information, I’ll always go with the one with less sodium.  For example, I refuse to buy any canned vegetables that aren’t Del Monte’s No Salt Added canned vegetables.  I rarely, if ever, put salt on anything. I knew that my intake of sodium, however, would probably be fairly high since I do eat a lot of easy-to-prepare meals.  I’ve said before that I don’t really like [ ... ]

Weigh-In 1/27/09

I kicked my scale’s butt this week, and not in the usual, I weigh so much it wants to cry kind of way.  My first thought when I saw my weigh-in was “Holy Crap!”  And then WHOOHOO!  I lost 4.8 pounds for a grand total of 158.4 pounds gone.  Of course, I’m still a few pounds over my lowest weight of last summer, and still have 14.5 pounds to go, but I’m heading in the right direction again.  I give my recent addiction to whole wheat couscous all the credit.    (Oh and you guys, of course!!!!) Not to toot [ ... ]

Doctor Update

I just got home from visiting my new ENT and am not sure what to think.  He was nice enough and seemed pretty thorough, but I’m still questioning a lot. Not only did he do a physical examination of everything from my shoulders up, but I also had an ear pressure check and a hearing test.  Interestingly, I seem to have some nerve hearing loss in my right ear. So his diagnosis is that I actually possibly have two conditions going on right now.  The first is the one I mentioned, patulous eustachian tube.  He even brought it up without me mentioning [ ... ]

My kind of ab workout

Before I get to my abs (or lack thereof), I have to mention a movie that I’ve seen recently. A while back (many, many months ago), Diana recommended a movie to me and her readers that is called “Disfigured.”  I ordered it in November, and it finally got here in the middle of December (yeah, took way too long, but that’s another story).  I watched it in December and was totally blown away by it.  It made me laugh and cry, which is my minimum requirement for any truly great movie.  I highly recommend that anyone reading [ ... ]

Quack Quack

Oh my doctor is soooooo frustrating.  Sometime I just wanna smack him.  He obviously didn’t know a whole lot about situations like the one I’m having with my ear.  In fact, after I repeated multiple times that being congested doesn’t make it worse and in fact often makes the symptoms a lot better, he still mentioned putting me on nasal decongestants.  WHAT?!?  I tell you that it gets better when I’m congested and you want me to go on a decongestant to what? Intentionally make it worse?  Uh-huh.  He then suggested that I try and make my ear pop more [ ... ]

Uncovering Pamela

I was looking at the calendar last night and realized that as of the beginning of this month, I have officially been blogging on this site for over a year. It’s so hard to believe that it’s been a year.  Sadly, I only have about eight pounds worth of weight lost to speak of for that year, but those pounds lost are outweighed by all that I’ve gained  (sorry for the puns – I can’t help myself sometimes). When I was trying to come up with a name for this site, I tried to think of something that would express how I [ ... ]

Weigh-In 1/20/09

Weigh-In….or how to blow a whole week’s worth of hard work in a single day. I did fantastic all week, ate well within my points, went hiking on both Saturday and Sunday, and then sent it all down in a blaze of glory paved with Friday’s Chicken Fingers and Fries and an orgy of Peanut Clusters. Yummmmmm, but the couple of pounds I was down on Sunday, turned into a 1.2 pound gain on the scale today. I also have Diana to thank for reminding me of how much I love sweet potatoes. Luckily, I only bought two!   But [ ... ]

Relating the Unrelated

You’re all probably sick of hearing about my latest medical woes, but I’m still on a mission to figure out what the heck is going on with me.  My theory on sleep apnea has been thrown out.  At least in my opinion.  I taped my sleeping for three days and didn’t hear anything, so I apparently don’t snore.  Hallelujah!  Of course, it would have been nice if that had been the answer.  At least something can be done about it. Side note:  Hanlie, I haven’t forgotten about the book you suggested!  I plan on ordering it from Amazon very soon! Wanna hear my latest [ ... ]

“Stinkin Thinkin”

Man, I’m just on a roll this weekend – I apparently can’t get myself to shut up! I just had to give a big shout-out to Katschi (Karen) and share a statement she wrote in her most recent post. Being obese is more about stinkin thinkin issues than having too much cake, anyway. As I told her, I think this is the best line I’ve read lately in summing up our weight loss struggles. I’ve heard that for a lot of people who have never had weight problems or struggled with their weight that they just don’t get it.  To them, it’s [ ... ]

Odd Concoctions

Over a year ago, I fell completely in love with a frozen dinner that I found at Target made by Archer Farms.  It was Tilapia with Mango Salsa on top and then couscous underneath.  YUM.  So, naturally, they seem to have discontinued the product (kinda like they did with the good fruit strips they used to have).  Or maybe I just haven’t been able to find it anywhere near me. I had honestly never had couscous before I tried this product, but discovered that I truly loved it.  Over the months that have passed since I had it, I [ ... ]

16 Things About Me

I’ve posted often about Brené Brown and how much I admire her.  She recently tagged all of her blog-writing readers to post 16 facts about themselves as she did.  Before I get to my facts, I wanted to share this post that she wrote entitled “Weighing in on Oprah.” Now, on to my 16 things! My body is still quite a bit more padded than I would like, but I have the boniest knees ever.  I do my darnedest to never kneel because, well, OW!  Shaving my legs around them is hell!  My mom says I have my [ ... ]

A “Complete Slacker”

I’ll admit it.  I like to slack off on occasion (never at work, of course).  (Random thought:  Isn’t that a weird phrase?)  I have been known to be the queen of procrastination.  In fact, in my college speech class, I used to write my speech an hour before class.  I guess I worked well under pressure. You all know I adore reading and that I don’t nearly have enough time to read all of the books that I want to.  In fact, I wish I could live for about 50 lifetimes just so that I would have more time to read.  [ ... ]

I’m Apparently Somewhat of a Hypocrite

When I went to see my primary care doctor on Monday, and told him the meds were making no ground on the exhaustion/anxiety, I could just about see him mentally throwing his hands up in the air.  I specifically asked him if he thought that there could be some other medical cause for it all and he said, “No, I don’t think so.”  Well, phbbbt to that.  I do see my endocrinologist on Tuesday and will go to have more bloodwork (to double-check results) tomorrow.  It was kind of funny to hear him say (after looking at my chart) that [ ... ]
