My kind of ab workout

Before I get to my abs (or lack thereof), I have to mention a movie that I’ve seen recently.

A while back (many, many months ago), Diana recommended a movie to me and her readers that is called “Disfigured.”  I ordered it in November, and it finally got here in the middle of December (yeah, took way too long, but that’s another story).  I watched it in December and was totally blown away by it.  It made me laugh and cry, which is my minimum requirement for any truly great movie.  I highly recommend that anyone reading this check it out, whether you’re thin or overweight.  It really is a great discussion about body image, from both sides of the issue.

The special features are also spectacular, including a discussion amongst professional therapists and the president of NAAFA, and others, about the movie and eating disorders/fat acceptance in general.  Very fascinating and I think required viewing if you watch the movie.

I kept meaning to mention it on here and thank her for the recommendation, but kept forgetting.  I finally decided to get it done and sat down to re-watch it last week.  It was just as good the second time.  It still really irks me that the main character asks for anorexia lessions from a recovering anorexic, but overall, I think that the movie will give everyone a lot to think about.  If you’re looking to hear a truly honest conversation about weight in society, this is the movie for you.  I don’t want to give too much away in case you see, but like Diana, I highly recommend that you run out and find it.

Now, on to my abs.  Don’t worry, I’m not going to start giving exercise advice on here.  I would be the last person to do that.  In fact, I’ll leave that to the pros like MizFit herself.  But if you want to laugh so hard that you feel like you’re getting an ab workout, check out Jen Lancaster’s book, “Such a Pretty Fat:  One Narcissist’s Quest to Discover If Her Life Makes Her Ass Look Big or Why Pie Is Not the Answer.”  OMG it totally cracked me up.  I laughed outloud so many times.  While I’m a devotee of sarcasm, I honestly am not a big fan of snark, but I thought this book was hilarious.  As one reviewer in the Chicago Sun-Times said:

She’s bitchy and sometimes plain old mean, but she’s absolutely hysterical.

Her other two memoirs aren’t weight loss related, but I’m going to get them as soon as I can from the library.

Have any of you either read this book or seen this movie?  I’d love to hear your thoughts!

I have not seen Disfigured, but I will be adding it to my Netflix list. I read the first Jen Lancaster this summer, and I went and bought the other two….but I’ve also bought 50 other books since then (plus the ones I’ve check out of the library). Really, SOME day this pile will be off the floor (and the chairs, and the desks, and from under the desk…well, I think you get the drift).
