Just How Fat?

Often, my dad will leave and mark articles from the newspaper for me to read when I get home from work.  Yesterday, this one was waiting for me:

Today’s weighty issue: The Ingraham-McCain catfight

I’ve tried not to get too political on here, but we all know that I’m a die-hard democrat.  This article, however, really has nothing to do with politics.  It has to do with human decency and suprisingly enough is actually relevant to this blog.  I agree 100% with the author.

I suggest you check out the whole article, but will quote a portion of it here:

As the father of a young woman, I resent the idea that she moves through a world where her worth is often defined solely and completely as a function of her physicality. That some men do this angers me. That some women do perplexes and appalls.

But if that’s truly the way of things, Ingraham could do us all a favor by providing hard numbers. How fat can a woman be, how much gray is she allowed, how big or small must her bra size be … in short, how far afield can she stray from the perfect icon of American womanhood Laura Ingraham apparently represents, before she forfeits the right to be taken seriously?

Or perhaps we can agree that a woman’s physicality has no place in a debate about her opinions.

I loved that article. We all tread a fine line I think, with our weight loss priorities…is it REALLY to be healthier, or is that just an offshoot of our greater desire to fit into some idea of attractiveness foisted on us by Hollywood/Wall Street? I mean, I’m never going to look like Brad Pitt, so should I throw in the towel now? :O)
The truth for me is that I’d rather have a woman love me with the 25+ pounds I still have on than chase me down after I’ve lost it. It’s kinda like winning the lottery and suddenly having more friends than you remember. Ya gotta look around and ask yourself “why now?”.

THANK YOU for the link to that article. What a great article. I feel that all those right wing “personalites” (ok I use the term loosely )are ENTERTAINERS….loud, rude, self obsessed entertainers. I felt that the Ingram woman was totally out of line, and that Ms McCain handled it well. I just found your blog and love it. our before and after pics ROCK. You are such an inspiration!

There is probably no issue that can whip the feminist in me into an angry frenzy faster or better than this one.

Great article. I’ve often been incensed by such characterizations.

On the other side of the same ugly coin, Ann Coulter is often dismissed by her counterparts for being a “skinny bitch”. And no one bats an eyelash about it.

Being skinny or being fat is not the issue. The truth is, the opinions of women are dismissed in media every day based on their dress size. Women in daily life are too.

Aside from dress size, bra size is a huge factor too. So is hair color. Women with red hair are “firey” at best. Blonds are stupid and those of us with big boobs are bimbos.

Notice I have not singled men out as the culprits? It’s because I think women do it just as much if not more than men do.

When or how will it stop? I have no idea. Having been on both sides of the fence, I refrain from the ractice. I’ve been fat, thin, blond, redheaded, brunette and big busted (thanks to Victoria’s Secret). All I know for sure is that I don’t judge people based on things like that, and God help the person who does it in front of me.

    What’d I tell ya? “Frenzy”!

Ok, so you know I’m as completely apolitical as you are democrat, and have no idea who this Ingraham woman is, but I really love the sentiment presented in the blurb you quoted.
Admittedly though, I’m one of those bitchy women who instantly judges on appearance. I’ve seriously got to work on that.

Interesting how the Author, ends his article, by making a fat (judgement)statement about Ingraham. Yet, its okay, because he’s male, and he’s writing this article. I guess he’s allowed to put someone down if he wants.

How can he suggest, that people stop judging on weight, looks etc, and stick with the facts. When he did the exact samething he called Ingraham out on.

    Just my 2 cents.
