Hi! My name is Pamela and I’m a book hoarder. I honestly can’t think of a single book that I’ve ever owned that I’ve sold or given away. (Other than crappy college textbooks, because those don’t count – especially since I kept quite a few of them, too.) I. LOVE. BOOKS. There’s no other way to say it. Ever since I was little, my mom threatened to make me go live at the library in order to save her the time and effort and gas money that it required to take me all the time. I remember walking out of the library as a kid carrying a stack of books that was higher than my head.
Now, in no way am I cured of this (very welcome) disease, but a book I posted about yesterday has spurred a feeling in me that I’ve never felt before. I want to get rid of this book. I will have no feelings of regret or guilt. I will let it go with peace. And thank God I only paid $5 for it. One positive thing I can say is that I loved the cover.
Unfortunately, I didn’t see Christy’s comment on my post yesterday until I only had a few pages left, but I WILL chuck the book at a wall when I get home. And I will feel much freer to do so in the future when I run across a book that I’m struggling with.
Now, I feel terrible for bad-mouthing this book. I’m sure the author is a lovely woman who worked really hard and spent a considerable amount of time and effort on it. Knowing a few authors, I know how much soul and love they pour into their creations. And some people may love it and love her writing style, but for me, it seemed as though she was trying too hard. It’s an exaggeration, but it felt like there were about 12 similes and/or metaphors in every paragraph. Well used, similes and metaphors are wonderful things. For example, this book was a burr on my butt (again, an exaggeration – but I often tend to lean towards exaggeration). She did seem to hit a stride in the middle that was much easier to follow, but I think I skimmed through about the last 30 pages or so.
So now I will work on finishing The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, which from what I can tell, won’t be work at all, but pure pleasure.
I’ve also been going through a period lately in which I’ve been feeling the need to simplify, and am actually considering getting rid of quite a few of my books/DVDs. This book will have the honor of being the first in the pile. Now, whether I can actually go through with giving it a few companions is another matter.

I either give away all my read books or I take them to the library and donate them. I always think how much my kids love the “buy a book” section of the library and how me donating books gives other people joy of finding the great 25 cents or 50 cents deals too. So look at getting rid of them as sharing what you love with others.

Dawn, that is a fantastic way to look at it! It will definitely be of help to remember your words when I’m cutting the cord on some of my books!
Did you throw the book?
